There is a new feature of Adobe Illustrator CS3 called Live Colour which make whole process incredibly easy, simple, accurate and time saving.

1) Select colour objects and open Live Colour from menu Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork or just simply click on icon Recolour Artwork in Control Panel.

This button is available when the selected artwork contains two or more colors.

2) On of the top of dialog is you can see active colours from selected artwork. Limit the colour group to specific swatch library. I chose Pantone Solid Coated.

3) Create a new colour group to add to your Swatch palette.

I found a great script by John Wundes. This script compares the colour values of a selected object and will find the closest match. I didn’t have a chance to explore this in CS3, but I am pretty sure it is quite easy now to convert CMYK to PMS in Live Colour.
