Converting CMYK colour to Pantone in Adobe Illustrator CS3. There is a new feature of Adobe Illustrator CS3 called Live Colour which make whole process incredibly easy, simple, accurate and time saving.

1) Select colour objects and open Live Colour from menu Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork or just simply click on icon Recolour Artwork in Control Panel.

This button is available when the selected artwork contains two or more colors.

2) On of the top of dialog is you can see active colours from selected artwork. Limit the colour group to specific swatch library. I chose Pantone Solid Coated.

3) Create a new colour group to add to your Swatch palette.

I hope this would help you :)

No problem Entropy. Is there any other tutorial you would like to see?

Well, there are 2 things i’ve been trying to figure out.

    1) How does one directly pick a PMS color? I now know how to convert a CMYK color to PMS. But haven’t found out how to apply a PMS color directly to a selected object. I know that the converted colors get placed into the swatch palette, but those are only the coverted colors. I also wanted to try to find out how to select an object and directly pick any PMS color to apply it to the selected object. (The selection part i know :)

    2) I was also wondering how to apply a certain font to some text without having to pick the font by hand from the text>font menu. For example i selected my text, type in the font i want and then press Enter to apply the font to my selected text, but that didn’t work in Illustrator.
In Photoshop that workflow does work. I’m not sure how to do it in Illustrator. The only way i know how to apply a certain font is by going to type>font and then selecting the font, but in that way i have to scroll through all my fonts every time. (I can type a letter which brings me to the first option of a font with that letter as a first letter in the font name, but still lots of scrolling when one has lots of fonts)

    Hi Entropy,
    1) To pick a PMS colour you need to go to menu Window / Swatch Libraries / Colour Books and there you choose what PMS model you need (e.g. PANTONE process coated). Select the object and pick colour you like, it will be automatically added to your Swatch palette.

    2) If you know which font you want to use, you can just type it in the Character window. Select the current font by left double click and type name of the font. It is the same in Photoshop and Illustrator.

    I hope this would help.
